Sixtieth Annual Robertson County Youth Fair, A Smashing Success
The heavy rain that descended on the participants on the first few days of the annual Robertson County Youth Fair and Auction gave way to cool, sunny weather as the outdoor activities got started. The final two days of the event were bright and sunny, with just a hint of cool in the air, which kept the massive barn temperate for Central Texas Springtime.
Vendors did a swift business selling their wares, while the lines to the concession stands always seemed a bit long, but moved swiftly. The great smells of burgers, onion rings, nachos and lemon aid wafted through the air beneath the viewing stands, enticing folks to wait it out for their prize.
Saturday night’s Family Fun Night was a massive hit, with hundreds attending the newest addition to the Fair - Wild Horse Ministries - who spread their gospel message with horse tricks, roping skills and lots of prayers. The kids had a blast after the program playing hopscotch, carpet ball and generally horsing around, while parents enjoyed some time resting and chatting about the day’s events.
The anxious young agricultural entrepreneurs in training spent three days washing, feeding and showing their animals while awaiting the judge’s final scores. Young artists and crafters displayed their heartfelt artworks and hoped that their creation would get the prized ribbon. Pie makers, needleworkers and tailors all spent some nail-biting hours as their hard work and effort was judged and evaluated. In the end, the winners were chosen and ribbons distributed to smiling, grateful young people and their devoted, proud parents.
Simply making it to the RCYFA to contribute an exhibit, whether it be a commercial heifer or a piece of art, is a grand accomplishment and all of those who participated in the annual fair should be extremely proud. Those who took home a ribbon of any color have my utmost respect and admiration as they showed determination, grit and courage for following through till the end.
The community support every year is also palpable at the event, as sign after sign was cluttered with names of local people and businesses who have supported the event throughout the year. The hundreds of adults and young adult volunteers, sponsors, judges and teachers make the RCYFA an annual success. The community is hoping for another sixty years of making memories in Robertson County.
