Vacation Liberty School : A Cool History Camp During the Heat of Summer
The annual Vacation Liberty School is just around the corner, and organizers are thrilled to announce this summer's American history day camp. This engaging five-day event that runs from July 14 through the 18 provides a unique opportunity for children to learn about the founding of America, its government, and its economic structure. The week of fun is held indoors at the Family Life Center on Cook's Lane in Franklin, so that campers and volunteers alike have a cool, summer learning experience.
Open to students throughout Robertson County entering third through seventh grades, including homeschool and private school students, the program promises an exciting and educational experience.
Participants will have the chance to meet influential figures from American history through interactive sessions, skits, and reenactments. A highlight of the camp is the annual reenactment of George Washington crossing the Delaware during the Revolutionary War.
The curriculum covers a broad range of topics, ensuring all contributions to the nation's founding are recognized, including explorers and Native Americans. Daily lessons will delve into the three branches of government, the Articles of Confederation, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution and its amendments. Fun crafts and games will reinforce these lessons, and at the end of the week, students can test their knowledge in the Liberty Game and win prizes.
Adding a practical element, students will receive VLS bucks daily, which they can use at the VLS store. They will also learn about budgeting and spending as they manage their VLS bucks for daily expenses and store purchases. This activity offers a glimpse into the capitalist economic system within a democratic government.
Lisa Baker is spearheading this year’s Robertson County VLS, and she’s always happy to take some volunteers. There are plenty of ways to lend a hand, from helping with crafts, to becoming a founder. Click HERE to access the registration form for participants or volunteers.
Jo Miller is creating a VLS for students from 10 surrounding counties that will show students and adult volunteers the fun of VLS. Each county will send five kids and two adults to the weeklong adventure to learn, experience and take part in the annual event. They hope that the VLS program will spread to other counties and that these important historical lessons will come to life for the participants. Local volunteers are always needed and if you want to help volunteer for the second week, July 21 through the 25, simply CLICK HERE to fill out the volunteer portion of the form.
