Local Residents Invited to Explore Bryan’s Past in "Hunt for Black History"

History is coming off the shelves and onto the streets of Brazos County this month. Local residents have a unique opportunity to engage with the region’s heritage through the Carnegie Library’s February scavenger hunt event, named "Hunt for Black History in the Brazos".
Running throughout February, this community-driven event shifts its focus to the Bryan area, offering a self-guided "scavenger hunt" designed to highlight the stories, landmarks, and contributions of African Americans in the community.
The program is designed to be accessible for participants of all ages, with no registration required. Those looking to test their historical sleuthing skills easily participate. First step, claim a Guidebook anytime between Feb. 2 and Feb. 27. Participants can pick up an official “History Guidebook” at either the Carnegie History Center or the Clara B. Mounce Public Library.
Next comes the fun; exploring and documenting. The guidebook directs participants to specific locations throughout Bryan. At each stop, "hunters" must complete objectives and record their findings based on the historical significance of the site.
The final step is turning in your guidebook. Completed guidebooks must be returned to the Carnegie History Center or Mounce Library by Saturday, Feb. 28, at 5 PM.
In addition to gaining a deeper understanding of local roots, participants who submit their completed guidebooks will be entered into a drawing for a prize. Winners will be notified via the contact information provided upon submission.
The event serves as an interactive way for families and students to connect with local history outside a traditional classroom setting. By walking the same streets as the figures who shaped Brazos County, organizers hope to make the past feel tangible and present.
